International Women’s Day celebrated across Kashmir division | KNO

SRINAGAR, MARCH 08: To commemorate social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women, various functions were held across the Kashmir division to mark the International Women’s Day with a pledge to make concerted efforts to transform women’s lives and ensure their equality. At Srinagar, On the occasion of International Women’s Day, various functions were held in the summer capital to celebrate the Day.

The main function was held at Girl's Higher Secondary School, Kothi Bagh in which Chairman of State Women’s Commission, Nayeema Mehjoor was the Chief Guest. The event was organized by the collaboration of Directorate of School Education Kashmir and State Women’s Commission. Director School Education Kashmir Dr G.N. Itoo was also present on the occasion.

During the function, students presented many cultural programmes reflecting the domestic violence on women and the safety of the women. Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission said that the day gives us the message that the violence against the women should be shunned and those matters where the women are victim should be highlighted.

Director School Education Kashmir, Dr G N Itoo announced that “Female Self Defence Clubs” will be established in all High and Higher Secondary Schools of the Valley. Later, the chairperson led a “Women Safety March” in the premises of the School. She also planted a tree with theme “Plant for Women Safety” and conveyed the message that the safety of the women is the duty of every citizen. Similarly, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages organized a Multilingual Ladies Symposia to mark the Women’s Day.

The speakers highlighted rich traditions of Poetry in Kashmir initiated by Lal Ded and the legacy carried forward by Habba Khatoon, Arni Maal and others. The Department of Agriculture also organized a function which was presided over by Director Syed Altaf Aijaz Andrabi to celebrate the International Women’s Day.

The Director said that traditionally agriculture has been viewed as a male-dominated industry, but now things have changed and women make-up the backbone of agriculture economy. He said in terms of women’s contribution to agriculture economic output, the role of women is increasing with every passing day and it is commendable. Director Agriculture said that according to a recent report by National Mission for Empowerment of Women, 60% of all the agriculture operations are handled exclusively by women.

At Bandipora, The Department of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) organized a function here today to mark the Day during which live launch of pan-India expansion of social campaign ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was watched by attendants. The function was chaired by District Programme Officer ICDS, Altaf Hussain while as Nodal Officer BBBP Javid Ahmad, Deputy CEO, G M Lone, Protection Officer NIC and Supervisors of Anganwari Centres attended the function.

It was said that a vigorous awareness drive is being launched across the district to educate the general masses about various aspects of the BBBP programme. At Anantnag, Education Department today celebrated Women’s Day by organizing a function at District Institute of Education and Trainings Centre here in which Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Younis Malik was the chief guest. The function was attended by Joint Director Education, South Kashmir and incharge CEO, Anantnag, Nasir Ahmad Lone and by a large gathering of women participants, students, and ASHA workers. On the occasion, the DC said that aim of celebrating the Day is to provide equal rights to women. He said the occasion provides us with an opportunity to work towards ensuring social, political, and financial rights to the women. A similar function was held in Kokernag under the supervision of Chairman District Legal Services Authority Anantnag Syed Tawqeer Ahmad on the theme ‘Women’s Rights and Violence against the women’.

On the occasion, legal experts provided awareness to the women regarding their rights and duties. The Chairman DLSA Anantnag said that all religions have given a special status to the women and educating a woman means educating the whole family. ADDC Anantnag, CEO KDA, SDM Kokernag, Sub Judge Vailo, BMO Larnu, BDO Breng, CDPO Kokernag, SDPO Kokernag, SHO Kokernag, lawyers and Anganwadi and ASHA workers were also present on the occasion. Meanwhile, various functions, seminars, debates and quiz competitions were held in various districts of the division to celebrate the International Women’s Day.
